Band’s Guide to the New Album

“Anthems for Doomed Youth” was not a typical recording experience.

In the winter of 2010, the High Dials settled into an eerie and unusual setting to craft their music – the Donnacona building, former digs of the Canadian navy. Many nautical metaphors would ensue as they set sail on this new adventure.

Each song on “Anthems for Doomed Youth” has its own story, from the moment it was written to the day it was mastered and everything in between.

Trevor, Robbie and Eric share some tales of writing, rehearsing and recording the album in this song-by-song guide to the new release. Enjoy!

Song preview 4: “What You Call Love is a Lie”

Our fourth song is a first peak at Side B. It features the trademark reverb of the old ballroom where the album was recorded. Lyrically, it’s a bleaker perspective on the long-term possibilities between people than ‘Uruguay’, but the High Dials always like some darkness in their sunshine. Shane Watt plays the groovy bassline, Trevor Anderson plays the speeding car. What You Call Love Is A Lie by The High Dials

Song preview 3: “Uruguay”

Only three days till the High Dials take the stage at CMJ in New York City!

This is song 4 from Side A, “Uruguay”. Song was written in, you guessed it, Uruguay! Lyrics are about that rarest of treasures- the lifelong friend. Music sounds like a sunny Uruguayan beach. Featuring local jazz cat “Big Red” on saxophone (uncredited on the album). Enjoy.

Anthems for Doomed Youth: November, 2010

The High Dials release their 4th LP, “Anthems for Doomed Youth” on Rainbow Quartz Records in North America in November.

Check out the creepy teaser for the record filmed while the band was recording in the abandoned naval headquarters they made their temporary home (below).

The best part about this new release is that fans will finally be able to enjoy the music on their turntables! A limited run of vinyl LPs is being pressed. Be sure to order them early, as they will certainly sell out quickly. CD and vinyl copies can be pre-ordered HERE. Preorders are automatically entered in a draw to win a High Dials prize pack.

Fourth LP Wraps Up in NYC!

The High Dials whisked their new recordings (and probably a few ghosts) out of their shadowy Montreal ballroom and into New York City this week, for mixing sessions with Michael Musmanno.

This is not the first time the band has worked with Musmanno, who first caught the band’s ear with his killer production on records by former label-mates Lilys. Cast your mind back through the fogs of time to the distant year 2004. The High Dials had only just released their first album and Musmanno leant his studio wizardry to remixes on the “Fields in Glass EP”.

The band had always wished to collaborate with him again and six years on, all the relevant stars aligned. After 5 long nights bunkered down together under the Brooklyn Bridge (literally), with all manner of rare rock n roll machinery and only the coolest contraptionry, the new High Dials record took its final shape. All involved are quite excited about the results!

Look for a teaser clip and some sneak previews on this site soon…

Release details are being finalised as this item uploads, and as always, dear Dialian, you will be the first to know.
